Brent returned to The Three Crowns the next evening and was pleasantly surprised to find Dillingham and another midshipman drinking.

“Mister Dillingham, how good to see you again, may I join you?”

Dillingham peered up at Brent and smiled, “Aye!”

Brent sat, the midshipman across from him was at least a year older than Dillingham.

“May I introduce my senior, Mister Mitchell,” Dillingham said.

“It is my good pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mister Mitchell,” Brent said as he stood and stretched forth his hand.

Mitchell stood and said, “Aye, it is also my pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mister Dillingham has spoken of you on occasion. I understand you are in the care of the surgeon?”

“I am, but not for much longer.” Brent answered and rotated his injured shoulder.

“Will you be seeking another sponsor? Mitchell asked.

Another sponsor was something Brent had considered, but was given to understand that once a boy was sponsored than it was rare to gain another. He answered, “I’ve served for near on six years and the best I can hope for is for my claim to be verified. I’ve not lost hope that it will.” He decided to change the topic of conversation, “I purchased another copy of Steele’s Essentials, to refresh my mind. I wonder, have either of you gone to a forest to select timber for a mast or spar?”

“What an odd question!” Mitchell blurted.

“It was on page twenty-three, as I recall, and I thought it was odd that it would be necessary for a naval officer to know how to select the timber.”

Dillingham asked, “Have you memorized the book? You know what page something like that is on?”

Brent laughed and answered, “I’ve not, nor do I wish to. It was that selecting a timber was odd, do you agree?”

“Odd, but if you’ve lost your sticks, finding more would be a necessity. But, back to your claim, have you hope?” Mitchell asked.

“Hope I have,” Brent answered. “Time, however, weighs heavy on me. I would be aboard and at sea tomorrow if I could.”

Mitchell smiled, “Perhaps it will come to pass.”

They talked on of other topics, but Brent had to wonder of Mitchell’s interest. He doubted the midshipman was in a position to influence his claim, but he was aware that many midshipmen had noble and powerful relations. Mitchell may be in that number and able to put a word forward.
